Choosing to design accessible clothing for blind users is a smart decision because it addresses a basic necessity that lacks adequate solutions and often relies on sighted assistance. Unlike other areas like travel or cooking aids, accessible clothing design for the blind is relatively unexplored, providing ample room for innovative and user-centered solutions. By focusing on clothing, we aim to enhance blind individuals with independence in a basic yet fundamental aspect of daily life. This approach opens up new opportunities to create meaningful impact and promote autonomy among blind users.

"Design an inclusive wardrobe organization solution for visually impaired individuals, that allows identification and management of clothing items without external assistance."

Preliminary Requirements

This requirement list is based on the early research stages and the first interviews and they set up a guideline for our design. They focus on the chosen direction, clothing, and how to identify clothing items.

  • The product shall be able to identify a piece of clothing

  • The product should be able to identify clothing items based on at least these two criteria: colour and age (date purchased).

  • Any part of our product in contact with the piece of clothing shall be water resistant

  • The product shall be reusable.

  • The sizing of the product in contact with the clothing items shall not exceed the average size for the tag (approx. 3*3cm).

  • The product/machine’s feedback shall be suitable for blind people (sounds, braille).
