Project introduction
The goal of this project is to design a product for a specific user. This group was assigned an individual with both partial hearing loss and a visual impairment. The research presented here will focus on the challenges and impairments that this individual faces. The research will explore both deafness and visual impairments, the experience of combined disabilities and the challenges specific to this individual. The research will attempt to highlight the personal circumstances of this individual and focus on their experiences, hobbies and challenges. Gaining insight into the everyday life of this individual will allow us to identify opportunities for innovative product design.

Case owner
We called our case owner Joe because of privacy reasons, this is not his real name. Joe is in his sixties and lives on his own in an apartment in the center of Groningen. He is completely blind from birth, he can only see a little difference between light and dark but not the direction where the light comes from. He also has a hearing impairment on his left ear. Joe’s hobbies are swimming, cycling, traveling, reading and listening to the radio. In the past Joe has also worked for the radio, at the moment Joe has no daily job. But he is still active in living by helping at the eye association and universities to improve life for blind people and he writes in the neighborhood newspaper. Joe went to a normal high school in his youth and he has several HBO level diplomas including telephony, machine writing and dutch.
